Other than the obvious ignorance of his condition that people have, I hate this attitude that people get about PoC who do lighten their skin. Instead of being upset that people don’t feel beautiful in their natural skin tone thanks to pervasive ideas about beauty and whiteness, white people instead get mad that he may have had the audacity to try to look white. Like, how dare he try to look white? It’s the same issue when PoC dye their hair blond or red or any other color generally ascribed to white people. How many times have you heard someone say “black people shouldn’t bleach their hair”? Where’s the indignation when white people emulate and appropriate a “look” from PoC? When we exoticize brown skin and “ethnic” styles? It doesn’t matter if he DID bleach his skin or not. The fact of the matter is that when you’re white, you have the autonomy to change your skin and hair however you want without anyone judging you, or making you feel like a traitor to your race. But if you’re a PoC, anything you do that isn’t ascribed to your race will be held against you by indignant white folk who want to put you and your body in a box. Just fucking mind your own damn business and stop politicizing people’s bodies.

I’m at home recovering from my surgery for a few days and I wanted to write this somewhere.

When they were wheeling me out the nurse was trying to make sure I was well enough to ride in the car so she was making small talk. She asked me about the tattoos on my feet and I gave her the shorthand answer of what they meant. It filled me with a lot of peace to explain “All will endure and all will overcome” to her and at that moment I realized that this very idea got me through this obstacle in my life.

Tattoos are a beautiful and sometimes life saving thing.

A new report released on Thursday by the Guttmacher Institute takes a comprehensive look at how the War on Women has continued past the election cycle and into 2013. It shows that the new legislatures across the country are still very much dedicated to restricting sex education, availability of medication, and abortion access for women. Indeed, 47 percent of the 694 provisions weredirectly related to abortion.

47% of 694? 326.18. I’m sure the other restrictions probably relate to abortion in some way, but if we just look at DIRECT RESTRICTIONS ALONE…We have 50 states. THAT’S OVER 6 PER STATE ON AVERAGE.

I DID IT. I drove from my hometown to Pittsburgh today. I feel so accomplished.

I have a somewhat irrational fear of driving and compulsions while driving such as: imagining that every car I pass is going to crash into me. I don’t know what it is; for the most part when I’m a passenger in a car, I’m okay, but when I’m driving for too long I get really anxious and I have trouble breathing.

I don’t know when this started. When I was learning to drive years ago I wasn’t afraid of it, but somewhere along the way I’ve become uncomfortable with any driving outside of driving to work or to IV’s. I hate highways, bypasses and any winding back roads that permit high speeds. I flying down the road with other people, just not while I’m in control/responsible for everyone’s lives.

BUT TODAY: I finally persuaded myself to drive back to school from my hometown which is 55-60 miles outside of Pittsburgh. The hour drive went by so fast and I only really had one slip up. No one crashed into me, no one got road rage and flipped me off, nothing bad happened.

This sounds so stupid, but I want to remember this day and how I felt after I did this. So I’m sharing it on the internet.
